I build gadgets
for the fun of it.

Small instruments. Hidden capabilities. A little espionage.

Away from my security work, I design gadgets that put useful technology inside beautiful everyday objects. This is where I share the ideas, work through the engineering and pursue the prototypes.

PRIVATE INSTRUMENTSCollection studies · 01—10Las Vegas / 2026

The first collection

Ordinary at first glance.
Then, something else.

A lighter with a thermal view. A tie bar with a quiet signal. A box whose opening is part of the experience. Ten studies in curiosity, utility and the pleasure of a good mechanism.

All images are concept renderings, not photographs of completed hardware. NOCTURNE is in prototype planning; the other nine are concept studies. Nothing here is offered for sale yet.

Thermal lighterPrototype planning

NOCTURNE

Light. Heat. A different view.

An evening accessory with an unexpected field of vision. I’m exploring a soft-flame lighter paired with a thermal display and UV illumination, inside a restrained lacquer-and-metal body.

Inside the idea

The reveal

Slide the panel to reveal a live thermal image. A separate UV mode brings fluorescent markings into view.

At the workbench

Engineering brief prepared and vendor enquiries sent. Fuel, heat, battery separation and enclosure fit remain to be validated. A working physical prototype has not yet been verified.

Where it began

Camera concealed in a cigarette lighter

SIGNAL concept: brass and green enamel tie bar on charcoal silk.
Concept rendering · 02
Haptic tie barConcept study

SIGNAL

A quiet cue. An unbroken conversation.

A tie bar that keeps an appointment or a chosen contact within reach, through a discreet vibration. The challenge is making useful electronics feel natural on a well-cut shirt and tie.

Inside the idea

The reveal

Different haptic patterns for a selected notification, a calendar cue or a presentation timer.

At the workbench

Wearable electronics, phone integration, charging, weight and fabric comfort need prototyping.

Where it began

Clock with Concealed Receiver

BLACKOUT concept: open green leather and brass valet containing a phone.
Concept rendering · 03
Privacy valetConcept study

BLACKOUT

Put the phone away. Mean it.

A leather-lined valet with a deliberately engineered RF-shielded phone compartment. A small physical ritual for dinner, focused work or an evening off the network.

Inside the idea

The reveal

Closing the lid is intended to isolate the enclosed phone from the wireless services tested for the finished design.

At the workbench

Shielding performance needs measurement across supported devices and bands. It would not prevent local recording or erase data.

Where it began

Inspiration: counterintelligence and control over communications

SPECTRAL concept: folding brass loupe with white and violet illumination.
Concept rendering · 04
Collector’s inspection loupeConcept study

SPECTRAL

For the detail worth a second look.

A folding optical instrument for watch details, printing, textiles and fluorescent markings. White and UV illumination bring a little investigative curiosity to the things you collect.

Inside the idea

The reveal

Swing out the lens and change the light to see a different layer of detail.

At the workbench

Optics, illumination, battery access and UV handling need validation. This is an inspection aid, not an authenticity verdict.

Where it began

Microdot Camera and its concealed viewers

DEAD LETTER concept: black and brass pen with a UV cap revealing a symbol on ivory stationery.
Concept rendering · 05
Secret correspondence penConcept study

DEAD LETTER

Some messages deserve a second reading.

A proper writing instrument with an invisible-ink function and a UV reader in its cap. Made for a private note, a dinner invitation or a message that reveals itself in person.

Inside the idea

The reveal

The cap’s light reveals a message that ordinary lighting leaves hidden.

At the workbench

Refill quality, ink compatibility, charging and the cap mechanism need prototyping. The effect is playful concealment, not encryption.

Where it began

Inspiration: secret writing and steganography

ENVOY concept: green leather travel clock with brass bezel and two small signal lights.
Concept rendering · 06
Signaling travel clockConcept study

ENVOY

Your time. Your signal.

A folding travel clock with an analog face and discreet notification lights. A familiar object on a hotel desk, with a second language chosen by its owner.

Inside the idea

The reveal

Two small lights convey selected meeting or message cues without a scrolling notification screen.

At the workbench

Clock movement, connectivity, offline timekeeping and power need integration. Notification delivery depends on the connected system.

Where it began

Clock with Concealed Receiver

COUNTERSIGN concept: octagonal green enamel and brass cufflinks, with a rear antenna window.
Concept rendering · 07
Authentication cufflinksConcept study

COUNTERSIGN

An introduction, carried on the cuff.

Dress accessories with a cryptographic NFC tag inside. I’m exploring a tap-to-verify edition record, a private collection dossier and invitations linked to an object with a story.

Inside the idea

The reveal

Tap the cufflink to a compatible phone to retrieve a verified tag response and its associated record.

At the workbench

Metal enclosure, antenna placement, backend verification and ownership transfer need testing. A verified tag does not prove the identity of its wearer.

Where it began

Hollow Coins

DOUBLE AGENT concept: black and brass security-key case with exposed USB-C connector.
Concept rendering · 08
Hardware-key caseConcept study

DOUBLE AGENT

A small object with a serious job.

A precision case for an intact commercial hardware security key. A tactile sliding mechanism and considered materials turn an everyday authentication tool into something worth carrying.

Inside the idea

The reveal

Slide the cover, expose the connector and use the key with supported accounts.

At the workbench

The case must preserve the key’s connector, touch control and any supported radio function. Authentication comes from the selected commercial key.

Where it began

Inspiration: concealed credentials and personal access

COLD CASE concept: green leather watch case with a small environmental display.
Concept rendering · 09
Instrumented watch caseConcept study

COLD CASE

A travel story your watch can tell.

A watch case that keeps a local record of temperature, humidity and opening events. Useful curiosity for people who care about the objects they take with them.

Inside the idea

The reveal

A recessed display shows the conditions recorded during the journey.

At the workbench

Sensor accuracy, battery life and reliable event logging need validation. Condition history cannot identify who opened the case or establish theft.

Where it began

Inspiration: observation, instruments and the travel case

DEAD DROP concept: walnut and green leather mechanical box with brass dials and a hidden drawer.
Concept rendering · 10
Mechanical dispatch boxConcept study

DEAD DROP

The opening is part of the object.

An heirloom-minded mechanical box with a deliberate sequence of movements. A home for a watch, a note or another instrument, with the pleasure of understanding how it opens.

Inside the idea

The reveal

Align the mechanism and release an unexpectedly placed compartment.

At the workbench

Tolerances, wear and the opening sequence need physical prototypes. A puzzle mechanism is not a high-security safe.

Where it began

Chessboard Concealment

A wardrobe-minded direction

Technology with
a sense of occasion.

I’m exploring how these instruments could sit alongside Dennis Ashley’s OurBoxLife world: thoughtful clothes, personal details and objects that feel good to own.

The ambition is simple. Make the hidden capability work. Make the object worth carrying even before you reveal it.

Explore OurBoxLife

A proposed collection direction, not an announced commercial collaboration.

Notes from the workbench

The idea is the start.
The build is the point.

Each project gets a useful job, a mechanism worth exploring and a clear account of what still needs to work. I’ll share physical prototypes and test results as they exist.

  1. 01

    Give it a second capability.

Start with something familiar and ask what else it could do.

  2. 02

    Work through the real constraints.

Parts, power, materials, heat, fit and how it feels in the hand.

  3. 03

    Show what actually works.

Keep the concept, the physical prototype and the tested result distinct.

Current bench note · 13 October 2026

NOCTURNE: the engineering brief is prepared and requests have gone to potential fabrication and component partners. Supplier commitments and a working physical prototype are still pending.
